Teeth Whitening

Teeth can be discolored or stained due to various reasons. If you want to improve the shade of your teeth and brighten your smile you can do teeth whitening. Teeth whitening can be done in 3 ways:

  • Professional teeth whitening
  • Home bleaching
  • Over the counter whitening products

The most popular teeth whitening procedure is Zoom Whitening. It can very effectively improve the shade of the teeth in 45-60 minutes. This is done chairside using Zoom light which is UV enhanced light used to activate carbamide peroxide gel applied on teeth.

This procedure is done after prophylaxis and polishing to remove deposits and plaque as they interfere with the results of bleaching. Then we retract the teeth, protect the gums and cheeks and proceed with whitening under complete isolation. There are 3-4 cycles in the procedure of 15 minutes each.

After the procedure, the patient is advised to maintain the result of whitening by using Home bleaching kit. The home bleaching gel is applied in small amounts on the bleaching tray and applied to 1 hour for 15 days. The patient can do home bleaching as and when required as the office whitening procedure is expensive and cannot be repeated frequently.

After Office bleaching, the patient will have a sensitivity that will subside in 48hours. The patient can apply relief gel, use sensitivity toothpaste during this period. The patient is also advised to abstain from coloured food and drinks like tea, coffee, mustard & red sauces, etc.

Home Bleaching can also be done exclusively for patients having done previous office whitening or not. In this, the patient has to wear the tray for 2-3 weeks to achieve the desired result.

Over the counter whitening kits, gels, strips, toothpastes are also available for teeth whitening. Although dentist assisted teeth whitening is the best way to achieve effective teeth whitening and address any tooth damages or gum defects that may need attention.
